I knew this thread would get out of hand quick.
Lets keep this simple. Before buying my car I looked at the Vette C6 and Z06, Mustang GT, GT500, S281E, and viper. Each had their ups and downs. You have to figure out which one LOOKS better to you. Why because EVERYTHING else can be changed or upgraded down the road. What the heck do I mean....
Say you love the look of the C6, but want more power in the straight line well change the exhaust, intake, tune, and you'll pick up more power. Want more put a blower on it. Want more put a turbo on it.
Say you love the look of a GT500 but want it to handle like a vette. Buy suspension mods, Lower/Upper control arms, A-arms, K-member, watts-link, coil-overs....it will handle like nails. Need more power change the pulley, want more upgrade the blower.
In the end you can do anything EXCEPT make a GT500 look like a vette or a vette look like a GT500. I can tell you before the C6 I wouldn't even look at a vette. GM did such a good job with the C6 that I still had to test drive it and it was a hard car to say no to. I just "preffered" the Saleen Extreme. Now part of this was because I have one of the sickest mustang modifiers in the business at my back door. Plus to mod a mustang is cheaper than modding a vette.
Now since your original question was a GT500 vs a C6 IMO I would do the GT500. Why? Because I see at least 2-3 C6 daily and it would cost me more for parts. This is just my simple opinion. Nothing more. I prefer the look of the GT500 as well.
As for the discussion on the 6.0L vs squeezing power out of a smaller 5.4L your missing some key discussion topics. Power is not simply made through displacement alone. I would take a 5.4L 4V vs a 6.0L 2V anyday of the week. Mod for Mod the 5.4L with 4V will make more power than your 6.0L. Plus the GT500 already has FI. Where the vette does not. To do the FI you would need to drop the compression of the motor and add a built bottom end. You could do a procharger setup but with minimal amount of FI. Where the GT500 can take 20-25lbs easy with the change of the fuel system. Now you will have to spend some dough to get the GT500 to handle well.
As for the person who mentioned the Caymen. Yep, its a great car. Handles perfectly. Decent starting price. Have you ever tried modding a Caymen? Have you seen how much the parts cost? Great car, but I would not take it over a GT500 or Vette. Should you take his advice and take it for a test drive. ABSOLUTELY! You should also look into a used M3 or anything else in that price bracket. You should never limit yourself. As for me I'll stick with my S281E that is sooo modded that it can't be taken any further......well I guess I took it a little further.
