GTItoGT, how many miles were on your car when you got the gears installed? Did your installer recommend any break-in period?
Sorry to butt in, your mechanic is right, with only 10,000 miles, the bearings and seals are good as new. I dont think the gearset itself needs a breakin period, they are run and broken in before they leave the factory. However, if new bearings are used, it might be a good idea to go easy on it for a short period to let them properly seat.

Mileage goes down on the highway, but w/ 4.10s wouldn't city driving mpgs go up a bit? For someone like me that does mixed driving it just might work out to about the same average mpgs.

ummmmmmm, id raplace them while you have it all apart anyway. its cheap insurance. I did a LPW diff. cover as well. its well worth doing while its apart. are the bearings fine? yeah probably but why chance it? I only had 8500 miles and i replaced everything. Also, I didnt really do any real breakin. I asked about it and he laughed. Its either installed right or its not. I have no reason to doubt the installer as hes been a good friend of mine for about 15 years now

I wonder if your the 3mpg drop is due to you enjoying the new gears too much.
