My 2006 escape did this. Filler neck had to be replaced. My 09 has done it once since I have had it. I think that the TSB was from 05. Try searching around for the TSB and take it to your dealer.

I have an 06. I have had this problem several times, but it usually happens on the second half of the tank. I'm not sure if the gas is just having a hard time flowing over into the other half of the tank making it shut off the pump or what. The dealership here said there was a TSB for the 05, but it was fixed in the 06. (they had to redo the fuel tank) They are not sure what causes it. It never fails, it happens at the worst time. When it is raining, cold or I am in a big hurry. My husband has an 06 and it has never happened to him.
http://www.ford-trucks.com/tsb/tsb.p...y-2006/t-06313 this is for the 06. which the dealership told me there wasn't one, maybe this number will help them find something for you for the 09

My 05 has had this problem twice out of hundreds of fill ups.

there is a tsb on this issue for 05-06 model years, but i suppose the same thing could happen to a later model year; it was common enough that i would have assumed the dealers had heard about this problem...

i have an 05 and had this problem too. went to the dealer, gave them the tsb number (they also questioned me how i knew about the tsbs too ... you'd think they'd know the internet is a vast and wonderful resource), they replaced the fuel tank, and now everything is working fine.

anyway, i attached the tsb for the 05 models, but the 'tsb 06-3-13' number hotdogn mentioned is an updated version of the 05 one. good luck

Do you have a TSB ## or remidy...etc??? Thanks alot,Joe

This isn't an issue that comes up out of nowhere all of a sudden. Meaning if it didn't do it from the get-go, it's not going to. The tsb is for 05 to mid/late 06 models. Dealerships should be able to verify if your car is already using the revised part numbers listed in the TSB. Beyond that it could be the Vapor Lines running from the filler neck to the tank.

Sometimes it happens to me, so I just turn the pump handle 45° to the left and not pump the gas so fast.

I've never had it happen on my 09 GT yet, but at work we have new diesel Dodge Sprinter trucks, and the one I drive has that issue... I've been able to find the sweet spot by putting it all the way in, and slowly pulling it out until I can go full pressure on it. I'll have to try to upside down pump next time.
