Default Newbie 2005 GT

Being I work for GM. I was really looking for a used GTO.

I found this yesterday, went and looked at it. Bought it.

http://www.vast.com/detail/cars/ob-N...ZmNpRA==/?pl=5

Hopefully I got a good price.

Anyway, couple of questions.

Radio. I noticed last night only the green display lights up. Kind of hard to find the buttons etc in the dark. Are the buttons and ***** suppose to light up?

Rear end bearing? Right around 70..I seemed to get a bearing rumble sound from the rear of the car. If I let off the gas the sound goes away instantly.

I have been driving GM FWD cars for the last 20 years, so I may have forgotten about rear diff sounds. My Z28 had some noise from the rear.

Any ideas? Thanks. Love the GT.

Congrats on the new ride...looks nice! as for the radio, no the ***** dont light up( unfortunatly) as for the rear end noise, i believe theres a TSB for 05s for the rear, although i cant seem to find it right at this moment.im sure some of the other members here can shed some light on that one. glad you didnt buy a GM...welcome to the dark side! HAHA.

Default Thanks

Wow. The radio doesn't light up. Pretty hard to see the ***** and controls at night with a black dash.

I searched and saw the TSB about the rear whine. My sister in law certainly has that problem on a Ford Expedition.

This car appears to have very new tires. So they may have been trying to figure out the noise.

My rear end sems to be quiet right up to about 70 mph. Then I start getting a 'wow, wow, wow' bearing sound.

Let off gas, sound goes away. Could simply be a U joint starting to go or rear axle angle issue.

I guess more driving is needed to understand the what, when, where the problem exactly happens.

Welcome and nice ride. I really hope you didn't pay what was listed in the add. With that mileage I'd figure about $12-$13K, tops.

Research using the forum and you'll find tons of great info about mods, problems and resolutions.

Default Bearing

Ok...another test drive today.

I can sense the problem as low as 55 mph. At 70 its doing its wow wow issue.

Only under load. Slight grade or going up hill. Let off the gas problem goes away instantly.

Seems to go away at 80 mph.

Looking around. I see the Mustang uses 2 piece driveshaft. I did slide under the car to check the center carrier bearing. To me, the center carrier seems pretty loose. I can easily move the drive shaft up/ down a good 1/16 to 1/8 inch. Does that sound like a bad center carrier?

I think the center carrier is loose enough where the drive shaft is sort of whipping around under load.

Hopefully. It just needs a new carrier. I think the owner dumped the car because of the noise due too the new tires. Maybe $50 part will fix it. I think the car was a pretty good deal.
