Opinions needed: 2010 Mustang V6 convertible or 2006 Mustang GT convertible?

Hi everyone.
I'm going through something of a mid-life crisis of late and have an itch to own a mustang convertible. I rented a GT convertible for my 37th birthday and fell in love with the car - REALLY love the convertible aspect.

I've wanted a mustang since my early teens (1966, 1967, 1968 or 1969 vintage) but life always seemed to get in the way. I love the retro styling of the latest series of mustangs 2005 to 2009 and also the 2010 so I now have to make the decision of which model to get.

I cannot afford a new 2010 GT convertible so my options have been narrowed down to finding an older 2006 or 2007 GT convertible or getting a new 2010 V6 convertible. With the rebates and family pricing that Ford Canada is now offering, the cost difference between the 2006 GT convertible and the 2010 V6 convertible is very small ($25,900 plus taxes for 2006 GT convertible with 60,000 km vs $28,500 (freight, yada yada incl.) plus taxes for a 2010 V6 convertible with leather, Shaker 500, performance package, 18" rims etc. (rebates total approx. $7000). Both cars are 5 speed but of course, the 2006 GT convertible has the lovely V8 engine and a gorgeous tan leather interior but it is now out of warranty while the 2010 V6 is Kona Blue and has 20 km on it total.

Which way would you all go? I am a fan of the looks of both cars (I actually like the rear end of the 2010) and simply want the enjoyment of a muscle car convertible. As this is an itch I NEED to scratch, I don't think I can wait until next year when Ford releases the newer engines. In any event, I plan to hold on to the car for the next 10 years or so and park it in winters.

Thanks.

PS - I know that $25,900 sounds like a lot of money for a 2006 GT convertible but up here in Ontario, convertibles are a rare breed and fetch premium pricing as dealers do not stock them year round.

Stkjock 07-17-2009 01:21 PM

GT all the way....

I can make you a good deal on a blown GT if your able to buy in the US

less then 12,000 miles, 5sp, 460whp and fully modded.

PM me if interested

GT, Like the 05-09 body better anyhow, no offense to the V6er's out there (Some are damn quick) but you said you wanted a muscle car, well muscle cars have V8's.

ensign_lee 07-17-2009 01:30 PM

Have you test driven teh V6 yet?

I think what you'll find (if you haven't) is that if feels a TON heavier than its older GT counterpart. I mean, night and day kind of difference.

My vote is the GT 'vert, though I am a little biased, being a GT vert owner and all.

GT.

I recently made the same decision and, by careful searching, found a 2008 GT premium in pristine condition with 16k miles for less than $20k. Patience and the internet pay off!

Having owned both an older (00 V6) and my 08 GT, no contest, GT.

Plus the 05-09 mustangs look better from behind than the 2010's IMO.

Get the GT!

It's not a mid-life crisis car until it has a V8. :icon_razz:

gt unless you plan on going f/i
or wait until next year and get the 2011 v6, it should be pretty quick

GT, I bought my 08' GT convertible with 14k for $24,000 earlier this year, and it has EVERY option, including 18" chrome factory wheels, Premium pkg, and Navigation. After about $150, it's in perfect condition (a few minor bruises, but nothing my local body shop couldn't take care of cheaply). They are out there, you just have to look hard.

I am curious about the weather in Ontario, how often would you get to drive with the top down?

07gtdude 07-17-2009 05:46 PM

Me and my wife have owned 4 mustangs since we have been together for over 7 years. She had a 99 V6 (wrecked) an 02 V6 (traded in) and an 04 V6 conv (totaled). I now have a 07 GT. We both agree, without an ounce of hesitation, that the GT is the best of them all, hands down. Get the GT and don't look back.

The weather here in Ontario is quite nice during the summer, which stretches from late May / early June until the end of September / early October. Basically it is similar to New York and Chicago.

I appreciate all the responses so far. I admit to liking the interior of the 2010 quite a bit over the 2006 GT I test drove but I there is the V8 factor that just makes the GT such a fun car to drive.

mm save all your canadian pennies for a 2011 GT.. 400hp/400tq... :D id rather not have a vert and get the extra HP if thats the only way to go ;)

Yup - pretty much came to the same conclusion last night:) Think I will pass on the 2006 GT Convertible I have been looking at though and wait for something newer with less mileage.

Thanks everyone!

ToddZilla 07-18-2009 07:39 AM

Is the car in question your own Stkjock?

cummins cowboy 07-18-2009 06:30 PM

I don't know why anyone would want a v6, my dad bought an 89 LX with a 4 banger, oh how I dreamed somehow I would come out one day and it was the vaunted 5.0. I would rather drive something else than a v6 mustang, its like being neutered

THEBLACKSTANG 07-18-2009 10:19 PM

Buy one from the us if you can. If I were you I'd go for the gt. For the few thousand $$$$ difference between that and a new v6 you could be making major hp.

S197winstang 07-18-2009 10:29 PM

GT or you will be sorry u went 6.
