Default How dirty is your oil when you change it?

My 1st change was at 5,000 miles. Drained the stocker oil and put in Mobil 1. Did not pay attention to what the old oil looked like.

At 10,000 miles, I changed the oil again. Out with the Mobil 1, in with more Mobil 1. I was surprised at how dirty the old Mobil 1 was. 5k miles is supposed to be early for a Mobil 1 oil change.

Maybe it was dirty because I was draining the 1st batch of Mobil 1 that followed the stocker dino oil? I dunno.

I expected it to be just a little dirty. But it was a lot dirty. I've seen a lot worse in other cars at other times. Didn't look bad. Just a lot dirtier than I expected.

With 1 being new oil and 10 being black oil, I'd give this a 7. I was expecting more like a 3-4.

You have to take into account a few things.
1 How hard do you drive the car.
2 You live in Mississippi so humidity and heat will make it alittle darker, welcome to the south.
3 The stock oil isnt full dino its a blend.
4 What filter u using.
5 I found mobil 1 to always be alittle darker then most other oils. Idk why.

Your oil will look dirty because the detergent in the oil is doing it's job, holding the dirt in suspension.

Having never used Mobil 1, I probably can't help too much. I can say that I change my oil every 5k or so with the Roush Racing synthetic and it usually looks clean enough to put back into the car!

Black oil does not mean dirty oil. ALL oil will turn black due to combustion by-products but that does NOT indicate that the oil is "dirty". What you really want to know is if the oil's protective properties are exhausted and that can only be determined by oil analysis.

I think I'd be more worried if my oil WASN'T starting to turn black after a thousand miles or so.

As Nuke and GoldenPony above stated, oil that appears dirty doesn't mean there's anything wrong. It's typically normal for the oil to be darker as mileage accumulates between changes.

If you really want to check your oil's condition, do an oil analysis. That will truly tell you the condition of the oil and the engine it came out of. Color tells you little, barring the obvious problems such as contamination by antifreeze.

If you are intersted in an oil analysis, try Blackstone Labs.

..and will also allow you to determine if you can continue using the oil for another few thousand miles or more until the next analysis. Many people have often put well over 20,000 miles on their oil. 99% of America does oil changes at frequencies that are recommended by the car manufacturers 1) to cover their azzes 2) since w/o analysis, the condition of the oil is truly unknown (see previous item #1) 3) it supports the oil industry.

my old 5.4 3v was black for the 1st 2-3 changes. Thereafter it was a nice dark amber each 3,000 miles afterwards.

Even with the blower, the oil came out almost as clean as what I put in there.

I use the Motorcraft FL-820s filter and nothing else. It is a superior oil filter.

I'm hoping my new 4.6 does similar. I plan on another RoushCharger in the future. But I might go with that Blackstone Labs with it.

Either way, I always use Motorcraft Synthetic Blend 5w20. Haven't had a problem in 9-10 yrs with it.
