Default High mileage S197

Hey all,

I purchased a 2005 Mustang GT with 68k miles on it a few months ago. Since then I have put another 5k miles on it. No issues, no problems, fun car. I am worried about the longevity of the car though. How long do you think these cars are good for? I am trying to decide if I should start doing some mods, or trade it in for a model with less miles. Driving it less is not really an option

Take care of your car, and it will take care of you. Change your oil and do the scheduled service on time and it will keep running for a long time to come.

Thats good to hear, hopefully I can put a million miles on this car! I guess its important to do the oil, regular maintenance and to keep records so that when the time comes to sell it (if ever), I can prove it.

Since you don't know how the car was treated during those first 68k miles, it's hard to tell. Being a Ford product, I wouldn't put a lot of money on getting over 150k on it w/o it costing you a lot of money but if it was treated well before you bought it I'd have to say you should be able to baby another 68k out of her w/o a lot of expense. Just be sure to perform your routine PM (Preventive Maintenance).

There are a few people I know with 4.6 engines and they all have had good luck with them. One is in a lincoln town car and they have over 200k on the stock motor so far. Other one has a lincoln mark 8 (cobra dohc motor) and they have over 150k on it and it still pulls hard.

Its really a gamble with ford stuff, sometimes you get good stuff sometimes you get bad stuff. There really isnt a way to tell how the engine is doing right now so just drive it till it breaks. Im sure it will last you a while as long as you take care of it.

How is the rest of the car doing? Seats and stuff and paint still look good?

Its got some minor wear and tear, nothing major. I would take a bath by trading it in so soon, but then its not like its going to appreciate at 1500 more miles a month. It was just my ticket into a 05+ GT at a price I could afford, so I took it.

I would hang onto it. These cars are easy to work on and fix anyway so it sohuldnt be an issue.

Hang on to it, you should be able to get 150k out of it if you take care of the car. That's a little over 4 years @ 1,500 miles a month. Then, you can drop a GT500 5.4 in there or a low mileage 4.6 with a supercharger/turbo of your choice ...or just buy something else at that time. You didn't mention, is it manual or auto? I'd worry about the transmission before I started worrrying about the motor...

My last mustang, a 2000 V6 had 130k miles on it when I sold it. Ran like the day I bought it. Only oil changes and spark plugs at 100k miles. Treat it right and it'll be fine.

Its got a manual transmission. And I am getting the mod bug, but nothing serious. I just want a CAI/Tuner and some racing stripes! I figure it doesnt make sense to drop a ton of mod money into it when I drive as many miles as I do. I will make sure I am up to date on maintenance.

Its actually a second car for me, my first is a truck: Dodge Ram 2500 diesel.
