Default Buying an extra key.

Ok so I had two sets of keys and I lost one, so I took a drive down to my local ford dealership to see about getting a copy made of the one I have so I'm not stranded if I lose my key. I talked to the guy in the parts department and they said that a new key is 35 dollars, but! they also told me since I only have one key right now I would need to buy 2 so 70 dollars and then 100 dollars for labor, all coming out to 170 dollars just for a new key. Does this sound right to anyone? Cause to me that sounds outrageous, and why do they say I need to buy 2 keys?

I asked at the local dealer just yesterday. He said I only need to buy one key and the key and programming would take about a half hour - total charge would be $68.

That sounds ridiculous. I thought i remembered seeing somewhere that you could program your own keys, maybe even in the manual. if not, call dealership around you to ask, it will save you a trip!

I do believe bolivianpimp is correct with being able to program your own key listed somewhere in the manual. Hell if anything you could just purchase a new manual (if you lost yours) and it would be alot cheaper than having them program it for you.

In order to program your own key you have to have two keys. If you lost one as the original poster said, then you have to go to the dealer to have a second one programmed (or maybe a locksmith?).

Once you have the second programmed key, you can then program a third key yourself.

That blows! Do you know why that is?

When i bought my car they only had one key. They gave me a paper saying that they saying that they would give me one. I went up there up to the dealership and the guy said it would take about an hour, and he only did one key. He also said that if i was paying for it, it would be probably around $100 so yea...... That is my input. I don't see how they would make you get two keys.

yeah the whole you have to buy 2 keys thing is what made me wonder it didn't make sense to me. Oh well I never really like that dealership to much anyways, although they do have a nice black 2010 GT500 lol. I'll call around tomorrow and see what other dealerships say.

Ya it could just be the policy of the dealership for some reason. There has to be something specific as to why they require 2.
