Default Loose shift **** on '06 GT 5-speed

(This may be a total noob question, but I searched around and came up empty.)

My '06 GT has its OEM shifter and ****. In most driving, everything is fine. On a "spirited" upshift, however, the **** will often turn in my hand during the maneuver. I'm worried this might cause me to grind gears or miss a shift, so I'd like to stop it from happening.

Simply tightening the **** doesn't seem to be an option, because the shift boot is rigidly attached to it and tries to turn with the ****. Is there some way to tighten the **** itself that I don't know about?

You have to pull the shift boot off of the ****. That will allow you to tighten the **** a turn or so to a point where it will not easily move. Then put the boot back on the ****. It's tight, but do-able. Take your time and go as easy as you can with it.

Another, probably easier way, would be to pop the entire lower surround of the boot off of the console and rotate the **** with the boot attached to it.

How difficult is this? Does the boot just clip to the console, or do I need to remove the console and free the boot from underneath? (I haven't yet had to tear into my dash/console for any reason on this car, hence my hesitation.)

Thanks for your advice.

The boot and the plastic edge that fits in the console are one piece. It's just snapped into place.

There is a plastic trim piece at the base of shifter boot that connects to the console. U can't see it because the boot wraps around it, but its rectangular and if you squeeze inward it pops of the console. Should take no more than 30 seconds to tighten up.

Hmm, okay, I'll look at it and see if I can figure it out.

Thanks, guys.
