2010 New Buyer Question: Axle Ratios
Will be buying a new 2010 GT premium at the end of the year. Going over options packages. Decided not to go with the Track Pack. This leads me to try and understand the different axle options and what they do for the car.. Not a gear head, so I need some help in understanding what this changes in respect to performance on the car.
1. Standard Axle Ratio= 3.31
2. Optional Axle ratio=3.55
3. Optional axle ratio= 3.73
What does the difference in axle ratio do for your performance, how does it affect the car Pro or Con?

Or 4.10's. The higher the gear ratio the faster the engine will also turn at any given speed. There's a minor loss of fuel economy past the "sweet spot" (about 1800 RPM on my '07 GT) since you're turning higher RPM's at cruising speed. Higher ratio gears do NOT limit top end since you won't even be NEAR redline in top gear with these engines.

Actually, from the old fox body days. They used to say foxes with 3.73s actually had a HIGHER top end than foxes with 2.73s. Had to do with the car not being in its power band. The car with the 2.73 couldn't increase its speed higher in 5th gear than the 3.73 car could. Or something like that.....

Can anyone here explain in simple terms what gear ratio is exactly? What does 3.73:1 mean anyway? And why do 3.73 gears improve acceleration over 3.55 gears? I've searched this on the net and can't find a simple explanation that I can understand. Oh yeah... I'm not very mechanical lol.
