Damn, they went up to $300? They were only $100 in 2007. That's a rip off when you consider that all they do is install a different ratio on the assembly line. The materials and production cost between a set of 3.31s and a set of 3.55s is identical.
It's probably less intended to be a "rip-off" than simply being a discouragement to keep too many customers from ordering the 3.55's. There are Corporate Average Fuel Economy considerations going on here, so It's reasonable to think that while Ford is willing to offer 3.55's, they're equally ready to discourage any of the less-seriously performance minded customers from buying them. The trick is to find a price point that discourages enough people to minimize the CAFE impact, but not so many that it becomes uneconomical to offer the ratio at all. Business decisions are rarely driven by just one consideration.
I forget what my 3.55's cost me, but it didn't matter (3.31's are too tall, and the 3.73's a little short and weren't offered as an OE option like they are for 2010 anyway).
