3.73 and Automatics
Does anyone know why Ford doesn't offer 3.73 with the automatic? I am considering upgrading but was curious as to why it was not an option. Could it be that it's not a good idea to change them out?

I think it's lame they don't offer it. But when you do the math, 3.73 on an auto ends up being the same as 4.10 on a manual due to different ratios in the trans and Ford does not offer 4.10s (only Ford Racing).

Assuming you're looking to step-up from 3.31's it would be an excellent choice. If you have 3.55's, then I wouldn't bother going to 3.73's. The benefit of the later isn't worth the cost.

I do want to upgrade from stock but I was just a little curious why Ford doesn't offer the option. From what little I can gather on the forums regarding automatics, 3.73's would be a nice improvement over the stock (3.31) gears.

I thought it was the other way around. In other words, to get the benefits equivilent of a 3.73 with a manual, you would have to go with a 4.10 if you have an auto.
Of course I could be wrong.

and in saying so you were indeed wrong lol! Final drive ratio of an automatic s197 with 3.73s is the same as 4.10s in a manual. If you think 4.10s in a manual is easy to spin the tires, you will literally light them up in an automatic because we multiply more torque than a manual
