Default Questions about Gears

I'm looking for another bolt on for my car that's not too expensive. I think gears would be a good thing to go with even though I already have 3.55's stock. I'm looking at either 3.73's or 3.90's but not 4.10's because I plan on going with big power adders in the future. How long does it take for install for these? Where is the best place to buy them? Are they easy to put on yourself, and 3.73's or 3.90's?

An install at a shop should take no longer than a day. Lots of internet sites sell them, check out American muscle, lethal performance or Late model restoration. They are not easy to install yourself, but can be done if you have the tools and time. If you are planning on adding big power down the road, 3.55s might be fine. Is your car manual or automatic? What size wheels/tires will you be running? I just noticed its a manual, 4.10s might work great even with FI.

I wouldn't even bother unless you go to 4.10s. The change to 3.73s or 3.90s will be tiny. I went from 3.31s to 3.73s and I regret not just doing the 4.10s. My install was about $550 total parts and labor, and it took a couple of hours (maybe like 4, can't remember, I just sat there and read a book). I had an aluminum driveshaft done at the same time which they did for free since everything was already taken apart anyway. I like the driveshaft more than the gears, frankly...

Gears can be very difficult to setup properly. If you are VERY mechanically talented then you can do it if you take your time. If you are not VERY mechanically talented/skilled then take it to a shop. Getting the patern and backlash setup correctly so they don't whine or clunk or wear incorrectly can be a challenge.

I also agree that if you are 3.55 then don't really bother with 3.73. Not much change for the money and effort.

Thanks guys. Guess I should just find something else! lol. How are the aluminum driveshafts. Are they really worth it? Easy to install?

I really like my aluminum driveshaft. It completely eliminated slack in the driveline and everything feels very tight and connected now. I got mine for $425 shipped from Shaftmasters.
