Actually it's a rather common problem.

Happened to me on my passenger door. I pulled the panel off on the inside and pulled the weathershield back. There's a metal rod connected to the door handle that has a yellow plastic nut threaded onto it. (It's not actually a nut, but that's the best way I can describe it. You'll see it if you get in there.) That little plastic nut slips if the handle is pulled too hard and causes the handle to not fully retract. All you have to do is thread it back up and (for added insurance) thread a regular metal nut behind it. It took me about 20 minutes. Sorry, no pics.

Wow, all this time I thought I was the only one to have this problem. Never thought to ask around
