Currently doing a gear install myself (first time!) and it's going really good so far. I'm stuck at trying to get my pinion gear out. A friend did it with a hammer and ended up ruining the shaft of the pinion. I have a friend who is going to be buying the gears off me so this is not an option. I've been using a block of wood and beating on it but no luck budging it so far. I've heard of a thread protector that slips over the threads, should I wait til Monday and get one?

Anyone have any tips?

the thread protector looks like one of
those threaded rod couplers, maybe 1.5"
to 2" long. not sure of the thread pattern and
whether a local hardware store would have
the size you need.

The thread protector thing sounds like a good idea if it fits correctly. Or try threading on the old pinion nut untill it is almost flush with the end, And get one of those dead blow hammers. There made out of like hard rubber or some kind of plastic and wont damage the metal nearly as much. They work good. And you will still have to hit it very hard to knock it loose.

Sorry, but you'll likely find little help here. Gear swaps are the one thing most home mechanics just won't tackle. Good luck though. Let us know how it turns out.

Yea, its possible but might be worth the risk. So did you get it knocked out?

A brass hammer and punch work or aplie some heat to the outer pinion bearing if you have on of those heater that use magnet and electric they work great but their pricey.

Screw the original pinion nut onto the threads of the pinion about half way. Use a brass punch and a hammer to knock out the pinion. The nut is to help as a guide for the punch. The punch should slide through the nut. I hope this helps.
