Default Looking for tires to fit a 17"? The dilemma(s).

Thinking of getting better tires for your s197 GT? And you aren't lowered and don't plan on lowering the car? Here are some miscellaneous pertinent facts you may be interested in.

-There are very few tire options for 17" wheels if you would like to maintain the stock, or near stock overall diameter of 27".

-255mm is as wide as you can safely go on a 17x8 and choices are somewhat limited in the 255/50 size. Only two all seasons and two summer tires (Nitto) that I know of.

-Thinking of getting a 17x9 and going wider for better traction? Good luck. Only a couple (poor) street tires in 275/50 and no true high performance tires in that range short of a single drag radial made by M&H. Every other option out there for this rim is either to short or to tall at the sidewall.

-You can always go for a shorter sidewall or taller sidewall than stock but without lowering the car the shorter sidewall looks like hell. And if the tire is much taller than stock you end up sacrificing your gear ratio significantly.

If you want a high quality all season and especially summer tire that is wider than 255mm then you are effectively forced into going with 18" wheels if you care about maintaining a 27.x" overall diameter.

Lower the car? You have more options. Some of us choose not to do so for various reasons.

On the bright side, those concerned about saving as much weight as possible, you really haven't gained much weight going with an 18" bullitt versus a 17" bullitt wheel. The 17x9 weighs 23 pounds and the 18x10 weighs 26. The stock satin 17x8 weighs more than the deep dish 18x10 does. Makes no sense but that is the case.

Good luck with your tire selection(s).

The following link was of great help when researching tires and wheels. Do not take the revs per mile values as gospel and always check with the manufacturer for specs before you put them in the tuner.
