Idle problem after alternator went out!
so my sister has a 2006 mustang GT 5 speed that had the alternator give out on her driving home from work one day but was still able to make it home. the next morning she charged the battery and drove the car to the shop where they replaces the alternator which fixed the problem. she got the car back and now the thing doesn't idle right. it is very low (around 500) and will sometimes die on her when she pushes the clutch in. any ideas on how to fix it so it wont keep dying on her? what should I look for?

How many miles has she put on it since the alternator replacement? When the alt was replaced, the battery was disconnected which reset the PCM's adaptive learning. It usually takes a bit of driving (not sure how many miles) for the PCM to relearn and to settle down.

I know she hasn't put many miles on the car since she get it back from the shop since it was running ruff. I bet it has been less then 100 miles but not sure exactly. I have today off work so I was going to take a look under the hood to see if I see anything that doesn't look right.

There's an idle reset procedure you have to run. A haynes or chilton guide will give you instructions for the mustang but on my wifes 06 Escape it consisted of:
1) Disconnect teh battery to wipe the PCM learned repsonses.
2) With the A/C off Start the car with all the doors shut while leaving the car in Park and the E-brake set
3) Let the car idle for one (1) minute
4) After one minute turn the A/C to MAX and put the blower to the highest setting for 1 minute.
5) With the A/c still on, bring the RPM to 2000 RPM and hold for one minute
6) Turn off the A/C and let the car come back to normal idle.
You could also just drive it but it will be messed up for a while (a few days) depending how much you drive it. The mustang procedure might be a little different.

I'll have to try to talk to her about getting the haynes or chilton book for her year car because mine is for the 94-04 mustangs. does anyone know if the idle reset procedure is the same for the 06' Mustang as it is for the 06' Escape?
