Default Cleaning oiled air filter, questions.

I'm cleaning my air filter with a K&N cleaning kit. The cleaner smells like a combination of 409 and windex.

Has anyone come up with a different way to clean and oil these things? I'm thinking a solution of simple green or just 409, anything that will break up the oil and dirt. I've heard of people using wd40 to oil the filter. Anyone on here done that? Used anything else for oiling?

I'm thinking of going to a paper filter after this. Had to try recharging once just to see how it works.

Any good degreaser should work fine but I'd stick with what's in the kit since you have it. Just be sure to thoroughly rinse it and let it dry 100% before re-oiling.

As far as WD-40, I wouldn't. The filter oils are formulated to be a bit more tacky, are made specifically for oiled air filters and therefore offer better filtering capabilities.

I've reoiled my Steeda filter once already and, compared to the Amsoil drop-in filter that I used to have on my SUV, is a lot more simple.

I've found that the K&N cleaner works just fine, no need to invent some other way of cleaning the air filter in my case.

I've used simple green the past few times for mine and I haven't had a problem. just spray it on, let it soak for like 10 minutes and wash it under warm/hot water for a while.

I think I would rather just replace my Steeda filter every 12K with a new one. They are only $50 and then you are certain it's done right. I think it's too easy to over/under oil a used one, plus you know it's really clean.
