#3
Try this stuff I used to to take off my vinyl rocker panel stripes two weeks ago its called Vinyl-Off 104 made by Cyrstaltek $9.75 for 8oz also they have some stuff called Ghost-Off for fading just an FYI, I had my rocker panel stripes on for almost two years and there wasnt any fading or ghosting as least for my Vista Blue and looks just like it did color wise before I put them on.

If your car has been parked outdoors in the sun all the time for the past 5 years there might be some fading. What color is it? Washing and waxing only takes care of the clearcoat, not the paint.
you can't get under the clearcoat, so compound wouldn't work. It used to be recommended year ago, when you could rub off old paint when you waxed your car. That won't work on modern cars.
You also shouldn't need to waste $10 to get the stock side stripes off. Wait for a warm day (or a heated garage) and use a hair drier and just peel them off by hand.
Mine were only about 1 year old when I removed them and they came off with no residue left, though they did keep breaking up as I peeled.

I think car color and exposure to the sun are big factors in the fading process. You can look at the door jam and see if there is a color difference compared to the outside.
I do think if you remove the stripe and there is fading, over time and more exposure to the sun, that faded spot will eventually fade with the rest of the car.

As you can see, my car is black. I took off my stripes about a year and a half ago. There was minor paint fading, but no one but me noticed it. I couldn't even really notice it until I was literally 6" away from the hood of the car.
FYI, I live in Florida and I am the second owner of the car. From what I have heard, the guy that had my car before me was older and kept it in a garage. I had it outside in the blazing sun for 6 months before I took the stripes off.
Just take them off. If there is paint fading, it most likely won't be as bad as you think it is. And like 07 Stang said, the unfaded spot will fade with the rest of the car. If you looked at my car now, you would never be able to guess that it had stripes at one point in time.
