If it is indeed gear whine our cars are infamous for, then its a perfect time to upgrade to some 4.10s, why not make lemonaide out of lemons? But it does sound like pinion bearing noise. Did it start after the dealer serviced the axle? I would have them check to make sure the pinion nut is tightened to the proper preload, 16 inch pounds. If that does'nt fix it, I would just go ahead and pick a new gear ratio and start fresh with a good install.
