SCT tuners/Brenspeed tuning questions
Well, I'm finally about to get the money for a tuner and a tune, but I have a few questions before I pull the trigger.
1) I planned on getting a Brenspeed tune, but is a 91-93 octane worth it, or would an 87 or 89 tune be good enough for daily driving with a bit of occasional WOT fun?
2) Where I live, we have 91, 92, and 93 octane. I've heard of some people getting a 91 tune and running 93 octane or various combos. What would be the best combination of octane/tune, if I were to get a higher octane tune?
3) Like I said, I planned on going with Brenspeed, but I'd rather buy a cheaper used tuner and order a tune. Do older tuners, such as an SCT XCAL2 work with Brenspeed's tunes, or do I specifically need an X3?
I appreciate all the help guys, I'm excited to finally get some more power out of my 'stang. Oh, for what it's worth, I plan on running the stock airbox, at least for now.

you should save up about $150 more and just get the CAI and Tuner package. Its a much better deal because its like $380 for the sct x3, $75 for a tune = $455.
If you go with this:
http://www.brenspeed.com/3000racer.html
You'll get a CAI + I think 3 tunes? I'm not sure how many tunes brenspeed gives you. This combo will make you much more satisfied

I typically run my Brenspeed 89 tune for most driving as it pulls better in the low RPM range than my 93 tune. If I raced, I'd rune the 93. It's a matter of choice. Even the 87 custom tune kicks azz over the stock 87.
2) Where I live, we have 91, 92, and 93 octane. I've heard of some people getting a 91 tune and running 93 octane or various combos. What would be the best combination of octane/tune, if I were to get a higher octane tune? Run the octane that the tune calls for and no lower. Running a higher octane than what the tune needs is a waste of $$.
3) Like I said, I planned on going with Brenspeed, but I'd rather buy a cheaper used tuner and order a tune. Do older tuners, such as an SCT XCAL2 work with Brenspeed's tunes, or do I specifically need an X3? Any of the SCT handhelds will work; definitely the Xcal2 and 3 (I have an xcal 2). If you're not sure, contact them.

If you can swing the CAI, get it at the same time so you won't need to buy new tunes later.

I use the 87 tune for daily. It rips compared to stock. I've run the 91 and 93 just long enough to say I did it. The 91/93 pulls slightly harder, but it's not as dramatic as stock to 87.
You'll be thrilled with the 87 tune. I'm also using the stock intake and didn't order a combo. No regrets.

I would recommend getting the tuner/CAI combo. You get a great deal that way. Later when you get the mod bug, I can tell you will be spending a lot more money buying a CAI seperately and then additional tunes. Keep in mind when you buy additional tune, it is for 1 octane. If you get it now, you will have 3 tunes that can already handle a CAI.

I have a lightly used (<5000 miles) C&L Street Air Intake that I ran with Brenspeed tunes for one summer for sale if you are interested in picking up a intake at the same time. PM me if interested....

Trust me guys, if the funds were available right now, I'd definitely get the intake and tune, but I have to go the cheapest route available. I don't really want to drop that much money for 3 tunes and an intake when I know I'll be perfectly satisfied with a single tune.
In buying a used tuner, are SCTs vehicle-specific? I've been browsing eBay and other places and people are selling them for Ford trucks and GM whatnots. To my understanding, it's not so much the tuner but the tune I need; I can use whatever tuner, as long as it's unlocked and used by the tuning company. Please, correct me if I'm wrong.
Thanks for the replies and advice,
Eric
