What looks like a wire wrap is not (unless you have an aftermarket antenna), a twist is machined into the antenna to reduce wind noise and keep tha antenna from waving back and forth. The aftermarket antenna that actually do have a wire wrapped under some heatshink or plastidip, have done it for the same reason.
I bought an aftermarket shorty and was not pleased with the whistling and waving above 70MPH, so did the shortening mod... haven't noticed any noise or waving even at extreme speed.
