Most are probably selling for what is owed on it. OR, there was a lot of money invested in a SC, engine work, exterior or interior mods. Or, like mentioned above, just fishing to see if they can get more than what it's actually worth.

I always ask for more than the minimum I will take. If I ask for $15 it is guaranteed the first dude to ring me up is going to be like "Hey man will you take 12 for it?." Then the back and forth nonsense ensues.

You think those prices are bad? Take a look here and see how much dealers are asking in Canada. Also, keep in mind that our Dollars are almost at par right now.

Because until they sell it, it's thiers and they can ask whatever they want for it? Have you ever sold a car, or house, or anything that buyers want to talk you down on? If you have, then you should know why they are priced high, so your question is stupid. If you have not, then maybe you just dont know, so your question is worded stupid.

You see a theme developing?

+1

Or they list higher because they already know people will barter and try to lower the price. Also if the seller knows what the car is worth and a buyer has interest in it at that higher X amount, then it's easier to tell how much you can squeeze out of someone.

Dealers can sell lower because that's how they do business. They make a profit from the trade-ins and then turn around and sell the car high. Even when you drive a used car off the lot after negotiations, they are still making a good buck off of it.

When I thought about trading in my corolla, the dealership wanted to offer me $800!!!??? KBB stated it was worth $3000 private sale. I asked for $3500 and ended up selling it for $3000 as is when I sold it to a neighbor. If I traded it in to a dealer, they would of given me $800 and probably sold it for OVER $4k.

Economics 101..

KBB says 14-16K for an 05GT w/low (22k) miles on it.

Dealers get these cars for around 13K @ auction.

First KBB doesn't sell cars! second people are probably asking more because of the mods..., a lot of dealerships are selling stock cars or mildly modded cars. Third and most important their selling their baby, you want the most you can get to justify letting your baby go!!

I want private party pricing!!! If not less
Because the world is full of people like you who want a great deal... so there has to be room to knock a couple grand off.

Also, for the record, I have already had two offers for my car (that isn't even for sale) for several grand more than I paid a dealer.

I suspect if you want private party pricing or less, you'll be looking for awhile - just because you want a bargain doesn't mean you are going to get, or entitled to, a bargain.
