Default How do you check if your COPs are going bad??

Well after doing my datalog from 2000-6500 in 4th gear at WOT we noticed at the spot in my dyno that the dip occured not only is my clutch slipping but I'm pulling about 3 degrees of timing. We are completely baffled as to why...Chris sent me a new tune to try tonight that may or may not fix it...we shall see but he said I could be having spark plug blowout which could be caused by my coils starting to go out so I wanted to know how to check each one to either rule it out or find a problem...also it could be pulling timing because the clutch is slipping and causing the load to change thus making the engine pull timing...he tweaked the tune so that if this is the case it wont happen again...hopefully it fixes it but I wanna get a jump start on if it doesnt

Thanks,

-Lance

Do you have stock COPs? If so, they rarely go bad and I would suspect plug issues. If they are aftermarket, then they are probably the problem. ESPECIALLY if they are Granatellis.

if a cop is failing you can feel the engine miss intermittantly. I've never seen too many fail in cars, but i've seen lots fail in trucks. At the dealership we have a tool that attaches to the coils to test them at max output to see if they fail.

I have had coils fail in my DD (Mazda) and my Yamaha R6, it feels like a severe miss and throws a code. But I also had a 4th gear problem where at 4000rpm it just made no power. But I also have a blower, I got a custom tune and it seems to have disappeared, but it has been winter and I only tried it once. It might lie in the tune or gapping of the spark plugs can lead to spark blow out. Those are the most likely culprits over an intermittent COP.

When the local shop changed my plugs last week the guy told me he had a device that checks the COP like goose5 said. I have the Granatelli MPG Coil Packs with no problems.

There is a simple tool to test your cops. There is a link:

scottykilmer on your tube has a video demo on this tool. There is also a tool for testing your fuel injectors. I think these tool are $80-$90

How do you tell if your cops are going bad?

They start asking for bribes when they pull people over or they're spending a little too much time a the loading docks at night.
