Missing a Gear...

What exactly happens when you hear that "sound" when you miss a gear? Is it actually the sound of gears grinding together?
I missed 2nd today and when I heard that noise (and felt it through the shift knob) I starting wondering what exactly happens when you miss a gear...

Indeed, you have metal/metal grinding against each other. Do it enough, and you will have to replace gears/synchros in your transmission.
Don't do it, lol.
:)

I wondered that myself once. Went back to basics to find out...

...so it's not actually the "gears" grinding. Still sounds ugly, though.

There was an issue brought up a couple/few months back where some folks were reporting temperature (cold) sensitive "notchy" shifting.

Since your description of "quite rough" can be quite open to interpretation, I'll ask if your issue goes away after, say, 5-10 minutes of driving (depending on how cold it is out your way)? Most people reported that once the car warmed, shifting was smooth again.

Edit to say: And it mainly happened, as I recall, when shifting between 1st & 2nd gears.

this is exactly what it does. When the car fully warms up, its pretty smooth, but when first driving, second gear its really notchy. I thought I was the only one. lol Any fixes for this?
