Default 2011 vs 2005-2010 manual trans

Here are some calculations I did showing the final ratios with the new 6-speed and the old 5-speed and hwy rpms for each. These are things people usually ask for a lot, especially when figuring out what gear they should go with. Also when looking to find what gear with the new 6-speed is "equivalent" to the 5-speed.

6-speed (MT82)
---
1 - 3.66
2 - 2.43
3 - 1.69
4 - 1.32
5 - 1.00
6 - 0.65

5-speed (TR-3650)
---
1 - 3.38
2 - 2.00
3 - 1.31
4 - 1.00
5 - 0.67

Final Ratios:

3.55 - 6-speed
---
1 - 3.66 x 3.55 = 12.9930
2 - 2.43 x 3.55 = 8.6265
3 - 1.69 x 3.55 = 5.9995
4 - 1.32 x 3.55 = 4.6860
5 - 1.00 x 3.55 = 3.5500
6 - 0.65 x 3.55 = 2.3075

3.73 - 6-speed
---
1 - 3.66 x 3.73 = 13.6518
2 - 2.43 x 3.73 = 9.0639
3 - 1.69 x 3.73 = 6.3037
4 - 1.32 x 3.73 = 4.9236
5 - 1.00 x 3.73 = 3.7300
6 - 0.65 x 3.73 = 2.4245

4.10 - 6-speed
---
1 - 3.66 x 4.10 = 15.0060
2 - 2.43 x 4.10 = 9.9630
3 - 1.69 x 4.10 = 6.9290
4 - 1.32 x 4.10 = 5.4120
5 - 1.00 x 4.10 = 4.1000
6 - 0.65 x 4.10 = 2.6650

3.55 - 5-speed
---
1 - 3.38 x 3.55 = 11.9990
2 - 2.00 x 3.55 = 7.1000
3 - 1.31 x 3.55 = 4.6505
4 - 1.00 x 3.55 = 3.5500
5 - 0.67 x 3.55 = 2.3785

3.73 - 5-speed
---
1 - 3.38 x 3.73 = 12.6074
2 - 2.00 x 3.73 = 7.4600
3 - 1.31 x 3.73 = 4.8863
4 - 1.00 x 3.73 = 3.7300
5 - 0.67 x 3.73 = 2.4991

4.10 - 5-speed
---
1 - 3.38 x 4.10 = 13.8580
2 - 2.00 x 4.10 = 8.2000
3 - 1.31 x 4.10 = 5.3710
4 - 1.00 x 4.10 = 4.1000
5 - 0.67 x 4.10 = 2.7470

Thanks! Great info. This thread just made my bookmark short list (although this should be a sticky).

Awesome write up....I have a question tho, the 6th gear is just a second overdrive gear, and it is barely different from the 5 speed 5th gear (or is it?)...how much better gas mileage does that equate to?

He listed the ratios for each trans, the 5th gear on the new 6 speed is 1.00(direct drive) meaning it isn't an over drive ratio so the 6th gear is just a little longer(.65 vs .67 in the current 5speed). Would make a nice swap on the earlier cars with the closer gear ratios!

The new 6-speed manual trans does not have two over-drives like the 6060 in the GT500 does. So really this makes the new MT82 a higher performance trans by having an extra use-able gear.

I plan on making a similar list but with the two autos shortly.

OK, I'm no math whiz, so what's the formula for figuring out what the max speed in each gear is?

IE: 2.43 2nd gear with 3.55 rear end would equal what speed at 7000 rpms?
How do you come to that figure?

Thanks

I rarely ever go into 5th(except when on highway only trips on cruise control) the rpms seem too low! I can't imagine having a 6th gear!

I never really see 5th only on highways, but we don't have as close gear ratios as the 6spd
