I can't imagine it would. Unless maybe your driving is abusive.

Lots of automatic trannys these days have a "manual" option. You've probably seen cars that have that little branch off the side of the auto shifter that has the "+" and "-" part where you can up and downshift yourself.

So it's kinda like that, with some safeties included to keep you from skipping gears or going into reverse by accident.

I'm thinking this would be great for autocross, and for sure a benefit for dragging.

This shifter is absolutely on my mod list. Depending on what other options are developed between now and when I can afford it.

The 5R55S is electronically controlled an will only go into a gear if the PCM thinks it's safe no matter what you select manually.

On the Thunderbird, Ford had a SelectShift feature (think paddle shifting) with the 5R55S. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ford_Bo..._Transmissions

I don't think manually shifting this trans is going to hurt anything. I do notice though that downshifting into 2nd with the rpms above 1K will cause a clunk. I think it just needs a rev match due to that shifting being a shock.

I am ALWAYS shifting mine and I have always felt guilty about it because I was worried it was hard on the tranny.

yea I am too, and it makes me nervous downshifting above 1k rpms. But does anyone know if your 1/4 times are faster by shifting yourself and all that? because im new to racing and heard that you are supposed to take your overdrive off and then shift these s197s yourself to get maximum performance. Any help?
