2006 Please help identify the "S" shaped stripes on side of car

Well I've been hanging out in the classic Mustang forum for a while because I have a 1966. Today I purchased a 2006 Mustnag GT. But I have a question about the stripe along the sides. What is the "S" shaped stipe? Here is a picture on my facebook page:

Is the GT stripe on the rear qtr painted on? If not I would take that one off. Too much going on with that on there. Everything else looks good. Welcome to the silver family. Check out silvermustangs.com. Enjoy the new steed.
