Drove down to 4 miles until empty today
It took 14.5 gallons to fill up. So, it looks like Ford gives a "safe" empty when the electronics say whatever it says when there are no more miles until empty. According to the gas station filling up with 14.5 gallons, I still had 1.5 gallons in the tank. I wonder if I really did have 1.5 gallons in the tank. All I know is I didn't run out but by letting it go until 4 miles until empty I didn't run out and was scared to go any farther.

I think pretty much all cars have a "reserve" built in. I dont know if that reserve is built in to keep morons from ending up on the side of a dark, country road to be subsequently raped by hillbillies or if its there to keep the fuel pump from over-heating.
According to Top Gear (I know, I know), the Jag turbo diesel they economy tested had another 100+ miles left once the gauge said it was empty, which gave it a range of 1000 miles on a single tank.

The tank is 16.1 gallons, plus whatever amount fits in the filler tube untill it triggers the auto-shutoff on the gaspump. So, figure 16.25 gallons on a max fill, or 1.75 gallons in reserve.
I'd like to fill up right next to the highway and then drive the highway till it runs out completely. I feel I could do 500 miles on the tank, which is awesome for a "performance car"

if you fill up right at "0" you'll put in a touch over 14 gallons. I've run it down past 0 several times, there's a reserve for sure. most I've ever put in was 15.8 gallons, almost powned myself that day!

I was starting to sweat it, I was driving all over looking at google maps on my phone trying to find a gas station. the area I was in was all residential and google maps was out dated for that area, kept sending me to closed stations.
when I get the blower on I'll never run that low. with a fuel pressure gauge go a little under 1/4 tank and you'll see the pressure not be as stable as when it's full. KB suggests not going under 1/4 tank and with the gauge you can see why.

It will usually run about 25 miles after zero... how I know this I was driving through Illinois and every gas station for 125 miles was closed late at night... I ran out around 28 miles past zero 2 miles from the gas station that was open.. so yeah you get a little bit of a cushion... now with 4.10's who knows how far it will go...
