550 h.p. whipple: 3.73 or 4.10?

i have 4.10 gears in my car(n/a) now but they have whine and the installer told me he will redo the gears. i think since i have the whipple and it will be installed in 2 weeks that i should change to 3.73. i think i will tell him that i will buy the gears also. should i go with 3.73 or stay with the 4.10????

I agree the 4.10s are not the best choice. I am in the same boat--> I think I'm going with a whipple and will probably switch my gears too

When I do my twin screw s/c ill leave the 4.10s in for sure. its all personal preference though.

it's all preference but I wouldn't go with 4.10's. with all the power you probably won't have traction in a lower gear so it's a waste. I drove my buddy's 04 gt with 425whp on 3.73's and with DR's is was fine, it would grip in first. I have 3.55's on my car now with the blower and they're fine. 3.73's would be ok I think but it's not worth the money to swap them out to me.

all that is on a manual, if you have an auto then your gearing is different and 4.10's might be ok.

I'm with Candy on this. I have 315 crank HP and 3.73 gears. When I truly get into it, 1st gear is worthless.

The fun factor is high, but actual power application to the ground is just tire spin. Now add another 100+ RWHP and those 4.10's. You are going to need some 295/305 width tires...preferably drag radials just to hook.

If the guy is going to do the install for free, I probably would swap down. But if I had to pay for it...I'd keep the 4.10's.

also, do you ever intend to race the car? or just daily drive it? the 3.73's will be a better track gear IMO. They should keep you in the RPM range where you can stay in 3rd gear when you trap. The 4.10's are probably putting you where you have to shift to 4th gear right before the end of the strip.

I'm on the stock 3.55s with a 12psi whipple. Any more gear than that would be worthless on anything but slicks.

I would suggest 3.73s, 4.10s would seem worthless. You would never get any traction unless you were running a retardedly large rear tire that would be stupid expensive! Also your gas bill would go through the roof running at the higher RPMs all the time.

i dont think it will be that much of a diff from 4.10 to 3.73 you can go either way on this but i would just keep the 4.10s in.

loudnlow 04-04-2010 02:47 PM

I know a couple guys that run 4.10s with TS blowers and thinks its perfect

Big50 04-04-2010 02:54 PM

I would wait until you get the blower put on and drive it for a bit to see how you like it with the 4.10's. I luv my 4.10's with my current power level (442 whp). Traction is fine as long as you have the control arms, a panhard bar, and drag radials. I am getting a built engine put in soon and will be putting down some where near 550 whp. So, I might be switching back to my stock gears after i try it out with the 4.10's. If I didn't go to the track regularly, I would probably put the 3.55's back in for sure.
