Yes you are correct. See pics.





Disconnect the linkage below the shifter and slip the hose over the vertical section of linkage hanging down from the shifter under the ball/socket (it just fits after you remove the bushings & compress the hose). Replace the bushings after the hose is in place & reconnect the linkage. The hose will end up in contact with the underside of the ball/socket at its top and the horizontal section of shifter linkage at the bottom. The slight compression of the hose maintains a pressure on the mechanism which dampens/kills the vibrations causing the ball to rattle. The shifter will feel pleasantly tighter & the action going from gear to gear will feel very smooth & positive.

It will all become clear when you get under the car!
