Default CANBUS details and Help

Hey guys,

I am working on a project that is trying to access security in the CANBUS system and the feasibility of a hack to gain control of the car.

What I am looking for is any information that anyone has on the signals this system uses to communicate with the car. Example, what codes are sent to flash the left turn signal when you flick the lever.

And of course any direction to additional reading or info sources would be helpful.

Thanks guys.

you're basically asking people to give you proprietary information. Good luck with that.

I am not looking for company secrets. This is information can be retrieved from your car by buying a $30 connector. The connector just dumps a ton of information and its takes a long time to sort and understand. So I am reaching out to see if anyone already has some handle on the data and the meaning of the codes.

And let me be clear, these are the "whats wrong with my car" codes. These are the signals sent by the CAN-BUS for car function, like turn on left turn signal associates to code X. We have figured out a few so far, but was hoping someone might have played around with this before and are further along than us.

Yes you are; the only CAN-related thing that is an industry standard is pins 6 and 13 on the OBD-II connector, which are legislated to be high-speed CAN on all cars. This is where most scan tools pull the legally-mandated powertrain DTCs (P-messages and P-codes.)

everything else going on in the car (body/chassis CAN) is manufacturer specific. See, CAN is a transport layer. At its heart, the CAN standards 1) tell you how to send a message, 2) tell you how to receive a message, 3) tell you how fast you can send/receive messages, and 4) describe the hardware you'll need to do this.

What the CAN standards do not do is tell you what those messages have to be. It's left up to the manufacturer to define their messaging strategy, and those are indeed proprietary to each manufacturer. Yes, there are analyzers on the market which will let you see and log CAN frames, but unless you have the information on what those frames mean you can't do much with it. And I doubt too many people are willing to risk their jobs to give out that info.

I could have sworn the title had an "I" in the middle of it. Apparently it is past my bed time.

Contact DiabloSport and ask them just how hard it was to crack the code
on the new Challenger Can-Bus systems...
