Engine is knocking, what do i do?

Tonight i was driving my car and all of a sudden it kept making a loud banging noise from the engine. So i flipped a bitch home and checked for dtc's and nothing popped up. Earlier today i was driving the car and it was just fine.

Any ideas on what the problem is? I dont think its bad gas because i ran the tank really low last time before filling up and it was gas from shell.

Mods to your car?

Did you open the hood and listen for the nock?

Are you talking about detonation?

Torch Red GT 04-25-2010 11:31 PM

well I use to have a cai and tune but right now i just have everything listed in my sig, stock cai and 4.10. I mean detonation, and i didnt open the hood and listen to it, i just went back home and checked for codes. It was only happening above 2k rpms, when i was cruising under 2k on the way home and not gasing it wasnt happening.

Banging

Yeah loud banging is bad. Mine "pings" up front if I use 87 octane and step on the pedal, never heard bangs though. Totally sounds like detonation. Could also be from low octane, what octane are you using.

I had that problem too. I'm not saying you have the same problem, but mine was a sticky lifter. I poured a detergent in my oil made for taking care of sticky lifters and it cleared it up within 15 minutes.

i was using 87 octane, could it just be the oil needs to be changed? i got the car when it had 39k miles and now it has 43k and have yet to change the oil

Maybe, when I had my Jetta it would make like a clicking sound when I first got it and stopped when I got the oil changed

Yes change the oil, if you havent changed it in 4000 miles since you bought the car then that is just stupid. Chances are the last owner didnt want to change the oil on the car before selling it, so the car probably has seen an oil change in a while. Start with that and see what happens.

Torch Red GT 04-26-2010 01:28 PM

okay i will, it was a certified pre owned car from ford so they claim that they changed the oil, but they probably didint

There were a few very recent threads about SeaFoam application including adding some to the oil. You might want to read that and give it try, followed by a fresh oil change.

Banging as opposed to pinging sounds like you had a cylinder misbehaving in some respect. I like the Seafoam idea since it'll treat the lifter via the oil and the injectors via the fuel.
