Default Trouble with RPM gauge

I have a 05 GT and over the past few weeks the RPM gauge is either off by a few thousand RPMs meaning that ill be driving in 5th at 65mph and it might read 7k RPMs or it might not be working at all. I did some research and found out it might be the vehicle speed sensor. it was about $25 at the Ford dealer so I figured it was a cheap way to start. Of course it didn't work. I'm just trying to avoid an expensive diagnostic ($90 at the dealership). Any idea's or what to try next?

Thanks in advance.
Nathan

my tachometer went out on me before, i drove with it like that for over a year, then the spedometer crapped out so i took it to ford, the replaced my whole cluster, its supposed to cost around 500 but ford cut me a deal and we split it 50/50.

Instrument cluster. If the speed sensor goes, you'll most likely get a DTC.
