Default OPINIONS wanted on CATS

I bought my Roush in FLorida, where there is no emissions requirement, however I live in MA & need to pass the OBDII test for emissions. It only requires that the car's computer shows "ready" readings - there's no sniffer test. With JBA headers and off-road H-pipe (without cats) on the car it fails every time of course.

I'm plannning to buy a solution in the form of hi-flow cats. Either the "whole enchilada" from JBA:

http://www.americanmuscle.com/jba-sh...ed-0509gt.html

OR... individual hi-flow cats to slip onto the existing exhaust system:

http://www.stage3motorsports.com/pro...Outlet-ea.html

http://performance-curve.com/425250-...nvertero2.aspx

I read somewhere that "metal" cats are required/recommended for SUPERCHARGED cars - whereas N/A cars can use ceramic cats... anyone know why? Or even if that really makes any difference?

Experts?...

The ceramic ones would melt in a FI situation. If you go to brenspeeds site and click on the cats product they explain the difference between the two.http://www.brenspeed.com/cvm11k.html

Patrick - thanks man... that's a good link. Seems a better solution than having to buy the whole H-pipe for almost $500... and from what I've read the metallic cats are higher flow than ceramic.

Thanks Patrick - I welded a pair of these Magnaflow Hi-Flow METALLIC cats in the H-pipe & it PASSED EMISSIONS! I appreciate your advice on the metallic vs. ceramaic cat material... I might have F^@KED UP royally if I'd bought ceramic cats... THANKS AGAIN!

P.S. - Performance didn't seem to change at all... car's still a rocket ship! Exhaust tone mellowed a tad, just a slightly less raspy "voice" now. Sounds really good actually!

Irok,

Good choice, I do live in Fl, but about a year ago I decided to go with high flow metal cats on all 3 of my cars! No looking back now, On the dyno I lost 5hp to the wheels, which has made me a believer of how far the cat "technology" has come. It did quiet the car minimaly as you stated, but still sounds bad ***. If I ever decide to move or inspections come back to Fl, I am covered!!

Plus I don't smell like gas everytime I step out of one of the cars...LOL

PS Bad as ride!!

Now youve got me worried... Anyone know if the Bassani Modular X-Pipe cats are ceramic? I think they are...

Like deekum1627 asked... What did you end up with and where did you get them?

Here's a link to the ones I got... scroll down the page to Magnaflow "Spun Metallic Converters"...

Thanks for the compliment Vader... I worked hard on this car & I'm VERY happy with the outcome!

So the stock cats are metal? They look ceramic.

Metal and ceramic cats have failed on FT cars. I run Kooks which allow the cat section to be removed and replaced with the OR section. Florida does have emissions requirements, but no inspection. (It cost to much for the State to run inspections.) After reading all the stories on cats clogging on FI motors, I pulled mine. If I was in a state that required inspections I would just have the cat section and OR section and switch to the cat section for inspections. No sence in blowing a motor from clogged cats for the $200 or so dollars the different section costs. Just my .02.
