This isn't what you want to hear, but it's possible that the residue you found was a product of a chemical reaction that was corrosive to the aluminum. Lots of cleaners have warnings about polished aluminum wheels for just this reason.

You should be able to get them repaired at a wheel repair shop though. I suspect they can buff it out.

I'll try the degreaser and no I dont think it was lime. I wondering if I have a claim against the car wash.

I had a similar look on aluminum wheels of my x type after washing off a lot of brake dust. Degreaser and elbow grease took the stains out.

Actually, I was able to buff it out of the aluminum but not out of the powder coated finish took about 30 minutes per wheel. One of the wheels still has some of that white crap on it.

Sounds like worst case is a little money at a wheel repair shop. Could be worse man. Good luck with it.

Just got back from a power coating shop total cost to repair the wheels is $400. At that price I might as well get a new set of wheels.

Wait, I thought you said you have 7k on the wheels? If they were that much I would definitely spend the $400 to get them repaired. So I take it the buffing didn't get everything out? What is the repair shop having to do to them?
