What should I replace the Shaker 500 with?
Looking to replace the Shaker 500 because I suspect it is draining my battery.
Ideally, I would replace it with a unit that fits perfectly and is a touch screen GPS that also provides excellent sound quality.
Hopefully, I won't need to spend more than around 350ish. Any recommendations?

I'm actually looking into this same thing recently. I just can't make myself spend a grand for a new HU. This is the one I think I may have decided on, mainly because I don't want a DVD player in mine.

You can get these on Amazon for considerably cheaper, ~$200 or so. I'm not sure what other harnesses and whatnot you would need, but it'll be tough to spend less than $500 after it's all said and done.

Yeah that is probably the cheapest name brand, and being new in the box, unit you will find. Although I think it looks pretty ugly. Ebay has some that are about half price, but you get what you pay for with no-name brands.
I'm just curious, do you turn the Shaker 500 off as you turn your car off?

Thanks for the replies... is the Pioneer AVIC the one that most people usually get to replace the Shaker 500? I was more active on these forums a year ago and I remember thats the one most people got. I suppose if it's the value choice I'll go with as long as the sound quality is good. I agree that it doesn't seem to look great... the placement of the **** and buttons leaves something to be desired.
The Kenwood looks good... I prefer the aesthetic of having the buttons on the bottom. (edit*** looks good but is too expensive. Like the other guy said, can't justify spending 1000 dollars on a new HU... ha)
And yes, I do turn off my Shaker 500 manually after turning off my car... however, that doesn't seem to be helping as I've had two dead batteries in 2 years. I've heard that replacing the Shaker 500 fixes the dead battery problem so I'm hoping that will do it for me.

Have an Alpine IVA-505 in mine, but http://www.alpine-usa.com/product/view/ina-w900 might be right up your alley.
On a side note, dont forget that most aftermarket head units will run at 12v vs the factory 4v. so you might hear an ocational "pop" when you power it on. Additionally, if you opt to put in an amp, you will want to replace your factory speakers as well, or you might end up blowing them...and replacing them anyways.
One other thing....$350 for an in dash navi/dvd system is really stretching it. Some other members might know some decent brands, as I sware by alpine....but they can get pritty pricey when you start factoring in head unit, mounts, adaptors. Speakers/cabling/amps all sold seperately

Ahh... is $350 not realistic? I was thinking the Pioneer AVIC as that was only 259 off Amazon. I was not aware that cabling, mounts, adapters are sold separately.
Thanks for the warning on the 12v v 4v problem. However, the specs for Pioneer list pre-amp voltage at 2.2 Does that mean I would not need an amplifier for that particular model?
Anyone with the Pioneer AVIC wanna share their experience in installing it etc etc?

In 30 plus years of driving, I've never turned off the radio and luckily have never had an issue. As far as I know, the only draw on the battery whether on or off is for the clock and memory settings.
