2011 GT Gear choices- opinions??
Hey, guys...
I just ordered up my Sterling Grey 2011 GT and I'm extremely excited to pick it up...in about 8 weeks.
So...I'm trading in my 2009 GT which was equipt with the 3.31 gears...which was my only regret on an otherwise excellent car. The gears really held back the performance compared to my friend's 3.73 equipt machine...So this time I went with the 3.73s figuring that the higher redline and the 6spd would negate any ill effects that the 4.6L/5spd car would have suffered. Plus, all of the car mags are testing with the 3.73s so I figured that this was probably the hot set up.
After reading a lot of threads on this forum, I'm starting to question my decision...and it seems that these might not be the best gears...and even a 3.31 car has been seen turning mid 12s?
My car will be daily driven with plenty of highway...my goal is to have the quickest possible ride that will be at least as livable as my 2009 GT was.
What do you think- Did I screw up? It's probably not too late to change the order. Thanks for any opinions or advice!!

With the 6 speed tranny I would have opted for the 3.73s as well. You can never go wrong with that ratio. IMO, you made the right choice. The 3.73 was only available on the Bullet Mustang in 2008, hence why I had to settle for the 3.55 =(

Not a hard choice.
373 is meant to pull harder and faster than 331 or 355. If you are a real drag racer you will fix other things to work around the shift point issue....unless you just want to half ars it and get the lower gears so you dont have to worry about it. Now gas milage is a different story but WTH your driving a Mustang LOL!
I had 373 in the Bullitt and know a few that had 410 or higher installed so it was easy 373 for me.

The thing that has me a bit worried is how the ratios end up with 2011s with the 3.73s...I have heard that this may end up being similar to a 4.10 axle in the 05-09 5spd cars...wich is probably not the best choice for a car that will live half its life on the freeway...or that it would run out of gear too frequently on the autocross course.

You should look at the gear ratios of the new six speed. 6th isn't the double overdrive like the T56 in LSx cars and Viper. I agree on the old T56, sixth was .50, on the new trans, sixth is .65, not much less than fifth in the current five speed. I do a good bit of freeway driving, and went with the 3.55's.
