Help! Can't remove harmonic balancer!
I'm trying to install some underdrive pulleys and I can't seem to get the harmonic balancer off. I rented a 3 jaw puller from advanceautoparts, but it seems like where the ball is bottoming out, it is removing material. I put it on and put about 50 ftlbs of torque on the handle of my socket wrench and I can hear the rotating assembly turning over, but the pulley won't pull any further off of the crank.

Could you take a pic of how you're putting the jaw puller in? What type of material is being removed?
Keep the car in-gear so you engine will act as a brake against the motor and keep the rotating assembly from turning over. How long is the ratchet you're using? |

The car is in 1st gear and I can hear the entire driveline moving as I try to apply torque. How much torque does it take to pull the stupid pulley off?

Unfortunately, I think I damaged the first few threads on the crankshaft. What should I do? I don't know why the pulley won't pull off. I thought the threaded part of the puller was supposed to be inserted into the hole in the crank where the bolt used to be? Am I supposed to take the washer off and leave the bolt on and have the tool press against the old crank bolt?

i know its a chevy thing, but this should give you an idea of what you need to do...

You should be using a Chrysler style puller because it has a rod that goes into the crank hole and doesn't allow the puller itself to push against the the crank snout.

I just got it off. I put the old crank bolt back in the hole and pushed off of it. I hope I didn't do too much damage :(

The Ford part number is: F5RZ-6A34Q-B |
Well now I'm trying to get the new bolt in with the steeda pulley installed and the stock bolt doesnt seem long enough. I bought another m12X1.5X60mm bolt and used it to pull the pulley on, and it seems like the steeda pulley is fully seated, but the new bolt won't reach the threads. I'm starting to freak out.
