Gear Install, shop used wrong oil. Help Please
Found out the shop that did my gear install used
80w90 gear oil instead of the 75w140 that ford says to use. They did say they used a bottle of the Ford Racing Friction modifier though.
I have driven the car for about a month with this oil in it.
Can this cause problems with my car and gears?
The reason they said they used it was they thought the 75w140... (thick oil as they called it) seemed to wear out the bearings faster. They said they used the 80w90 on all their gear swaps.
Should I be worried?
Thx.

Have you had any problems since the install that would warrant your concern?
If so, did the shop acknowledge that the "chose" not to use the manufacturer's recommendations and instead use this other weight? If they did I would insist that they make it right since you paid them to install it and they went outside the recommendation of the manufacturer, causing the problem. If no problem, have them commit in writing that they will accept responsibility if their decision is found to cause problems in the future. If they do indeed use this weight in all their gear installs, they should be confident enough to back it up... just my 2cents.
Good luck,
Don

Like I said we are having to check the stamp to make SURE they installed the right gears for certain reasons.
I called the shop that did it just out of curiosity asking them what kind of oil they used because the current mechanic at this different shop asked me to go buy the 75w140 and friction modifier for after we checked the stamp and it just popped in my head to call the other place to ask them what kind they used.

If it were me, I'd drive your car a couple thousand miles as is and "break in" the new gears. At that time, I'd drain it and install the 75W140 synthetic and a bottle of Ford friction modifier. You are not going to hurt anything.
