So my gas cap randomly broke

So my gas cap randomly broke
I stopped to fill up last night and as I was unscrewing the gas cap, the little plastic connector piece that ties it to the car randomly decided to break. Has this happened to anyone else? I'd probably like to replace it as I'd imagine it's a little pain to set it on the ground and risk getting it dirty anytime I need some gas. Anyone know where to get a sexy billet replacement? Haha... kidding.

That's a new one. My Stangs are at home in the garage and I'm at work or I'd run over and see what could be fabricated to replace the OE plastic piece.
Of course, my first thought was that the problem occurred because you were UNscrewing and everyone knows that screwing makes everything just fine...

I say if the strap is on, then you're ready for a screw in.
You guys...
Vicky, this is not all unusual. It happens, cold weather etc...
If you can't find a billet or sexy replacement, it's not an expensive item to buy.
There is always the bone yard...

Isn't the gas cap door designed to hold the cap when it is open? Personally I think the lanyard that is attached to it and the car can be a PITA sometimes. I would love to remove the BP that seems to be silk screened on the cap and have thought about checking into aftermarket replacements.

Apparently Ford missed that one. I don't know about 2010+ but I know that the '06 did not have that feature yet my old '98 Corolla did.. I'm actually not a real big fan of the gas cap dangling there against the quarter panel.
