Battery removal is not necessary.. the filter is behind the firewall. I found it easiest to take the cowl off if you turn on the wipers and shut the car off while they are in mid motion. You'll find lots of fun stuff in the dirty filter.
lol, i wish ha ha

The smell is a mold. On recirculate the moisture will always be there. So, cool your initially with MAX setting which recycles the cool air to make it cooler and then turn it to regular when the car is cool. When parked, leave window cracked and air control on vent to let air breath through the system. This should work for every car.

Sometimes if you have excess water or mold/moisture built up, turning it through a heat cycle with remove it. Usually it's hot enough already that the air in the vents evaporate themoisture, but if the vent is on open, no air will circulate.

Another old trick is to shoot some Lysol into the cowl air intake with the a/c on high fan. It's also a good idea to check that the condensate drain isn't plugged, contributing to the evaporator mold.

And regarding the cabin air filter:
Yeah, we wouldn't want to breath unfiltered air. Don't drive with your windows down and be sure to wear a dust mask running from your house or work to your car or hold your breath. How did we ever survive before cabin air filters???

I changed mine at 30,000 miles and what a near-useless POS it is to get worried about.
I have the printed Ford Workshop Manuals and over the last
3 years, they have almost been memorized.
Finding info on the web based Workshop lookup is hard at best unless
you know the info is there and where it actually is.
Its like I have the road map to the manual in my head and that
makes navigation of the web manual better than most...

Rockauto has some pretty good priced filters.
