Default Need some advice with 2011 6-Speed Manual

I have driven several 5-Speed manuals in my lifetime, though it's been a while, but never a 6-Speed. Is there a general guideline as to what gear/RPM's I should be at various speeds? Say 30, 40, 50, 60?

At what point do you generally utilize 6th gear?

Depends on the gearing of the transmission and whether 5th gear is the 1:1 ratio, or 4th gear is. My CTS-V is a 6 speed, and I usually drop her into 6th at 50+, though 5th could probably go up to 110-120.

I generally find myself cruising around 55-60 most of the time. Does running in 5th gear at about 2000-2500 RPM constantly too much for extended periods?

The 6 speed in the 2011 Mustang isn't like the ones in Vettes, Vipers etc... Those have two overdrive gears where the Mustang is a close ratio with 5th being 1:1 and only 6th is the overdrive so it will be same RPM cruising on the highway as a 5 speed.

Chronism I drop into to 6th anytime I am over 45 around town and have no issues. Of course I am not hot rodding around everywhere I go. With city and highway mix I have been averaging right around 19-20 mpg.

Thanks for the responses. What my concern is, that during my break-in period, not knowing any better, I had found myself running 50-55mph and in 5th gear for a mile or two, around 2200-2500rpm. Not shifting into 6th until I would go 60 or more. Has/will this create any harm?

I was trying to vary my RPM's. It always seemed I was around 2000 other than this...

Nothing to worry about. 2500 RPM is nothing for the engine . Granted, its a different 5.0, but when I broke in my stroker, I was just supposed to keep it under 5000.

I only use 6th when I can cruise at a constant speed (60-80). I use 5th to pass on the highway when needed (Fun!!..lots of power in 5th)...or in moderate traffic (40-60). Don't worry about hurting the car...the engine was broken in at the factory

It's taken me some time to get used to this thing, but now I learned to take rolling turns in 3rd, go to 2500-3000 rpm before shifting into 2nd, and I no longer shift into 3rd when trying to hit 5th.. :0
