Default destroying the clutch at the track?

I have had the opportunity to go to the track with the local Mustang club, it seems like a good time and is only $50, sounds like a lot of fun and want to see what my numbers are. My only problem is I have heard too many stories of people destroying their clutch at the track and having their car towed home! This sounds very expensive for some fun for $50 track fee. Can someone explain what is it that causes this to happen?

Usually its by launching the car at a high RPM. Instead of the clutch easing into the power at 2000 rpm, its suddenly hit by 5000rpm and all the torque that comes with it.

well as long as you don't use drag radials , or slicks . you should b fine . no need for a burn out . dont slip the clutch . just rev to about 1200 . let the clutch out , then once your moving floor it , any rpms much more then that with street tires , it probably gonna spin , and spin = slow

I blew the clutch out of my 05 on my 4th pass, I was running a 100 shot of nitrous and ET streets with 40,000 miles on a stock clutch. Do what everyone else said above no burnout and baby it at the line and you should be fine.

Don't go to the track unless you have money to spend on broken parts

Went to the track and blew my clutch first time down the strip. Luckily I towed the car to the track with my truck..

OP, are you talking about the NVMC event? I've been tempted to attend one of those too but the times have never been right. My concern at these things isn't so much broken parts (I won't be trying to set any records) its the guy in the POS in the next lane having a wheel fall off or something and careening into me.

Been going to drag strips for years. I've never broken a clutch. Rev to 1,500-2,000 RPM, quickly come off the clutch as you come down on the gas, and you're done.
