I bought a Grabber Blue GT off the lot last week, but it was also only one of 4 within 300 miles of me.

I just got lucky. I had been wanting a black GT/CS and I happened to stop by my dealer to get some maintenance done and there was one sitting right out front at the exit. I had no intention of buying one anytime soon but I couldn't help myself.

I should have said this in my previous post but it took me nearly 4 months to get my car so I would think 6-8 weeks is really unrealistic.

True, "Mustangs" are readily available on dealer lots. What it comes down to is (a) whether your preferred model and color is among them (b) how closely any that are match up otherwise with the way you want yours equipped, and (c) how negotiable you as an individual are on the things that don't "line up".

With respect to item (c), some people are more willing to settle for less (or in some cases more) than others. If you're firmly set on things that the car either must or absolutely must not have, you normally have to go through the ordering process and just wait it out. And if you aren't the type to buy cars at frequent intervals, there is little reason to "settle for" something and then have to live with it over the long run. Six or eight years down the road it won't make enough difference at trade/resale either up or down to matter.

This does get a lot easier if you have one or more cars to fall back on while your new one is getting built/delivered. I think my '08 took 5 or 6 weeks, though I really don't remember. Put the order together, left a deposit, called the dealership once or twice, and it came a couple of days after the last call. Don't get me wrong - I was happy as hell when it got there. But I just went back to life as usual in the meantime. There's some old saying about watched pots never boiling.

I live close to my dealership and bought my CS off the lot. I have yet to see another CS model anywhere on their lot. Heck I have yet to see another 2011 CS even on the road.

Forgot to mention I work for the railroad. Don't hold your breathe. Auto's are usually expedited, but can still take longer than you think sometimes. If you could find out the car number of the railcar...... I bet I could tell you where it is.
