Default tpms question

Do I need tire pressue monitor sensors if I get new rims and tires? I have a 2010 gt premium, does my car come with them stock? What will happen if I buy a new set of rims and tires without them? Reason I am asking is cause if I order the black gt500 rims from american muscle, I can save $240

if you don't mind the tpms light staying on on your dash then you don't need new sensors. but i also think that in order to pass smog you will need to put your stock wheels back on so the tpms light goes off on your dash (im not 100% sure on the smog part).

Yes, you would have to buy new tpms for your new wheels & tires. You won't be able to use your stock tpms because each wheel is different. Without tpms, I think you will have the light on on your cluster. If I were to get new wheels & tires, I'd get tpms IMO.

Correct me if I'm wrong but the 10's should have the same TPMS band sensors like the 05-09's. All you need to do is take them off your old rims, get some universal band and put them in the new ones. Also in NY you can pass inspection with TPMS light on.

I am not sure, I think the '10 and '11 TMPS wheel sensors are stem sensors, not band sensors. The '09 and earlier sensors might not be compatible.

I guess when in doubt, ask the Ford techs at the dealer, and order up the appropriate type.

I have heard of some people putting their sensors into a PVC pipe that is capped off with a pressure fitting installed in one side. The tube is then pressurized and tied down somewhere in the car to keep the light from coming on. A low tech fix, but I guess it works.

The '10s have the stem sensors. IMO, just buy them and have AM install them for you. Thats what I did. I used the training tool to "teach" the car, which took all of about 2 minutes after watching the DVD that comes with the tool... Its not a bad safety feature anyway. I know many people bag on them, but its always helpful in the case of a slow leak. You might pickup a nail in a passenger side tire and not notice its low. I'd rather have that light come on to warn me, than me driving 85 on the highway a few minutes later and having a blowout...

ROFL!

If I have an errant tire and I don't want to see that stupid light, I guess your idea is a nice little band-aid until I could get a proper tire!
