Default Ball joints "have play"

I just took my 07 GT to have rear snow tires put on for the winter The car has 43k miles on it.

I took it to a local tire guy to have them do the mount and balance. They called me and said that my front ball joints "have some play" in them and he "wouldn't pass" the front right. Looking at the right front tire, I am starting to see some wear on the inside... so - looks like the ball joints are going. :-(

This has been covered nicely before in these very forums (here and here

I just had a couple of follow up questions. If I read it right, I have to replace the entire A-arm assembly, as it is now a one-piece design. Someone suggested that the GT-500 arms are heavier duty. Sounds like a great idea. If I have to replace them, I would love to get something better - as I would not like to have to replace the same part *again* in another 43k miles. Does anyone know if the GT-500 A-arms will work with the 17" wheels? Thanks.

Ball joints at 43k miles? What are driving on? Railroad tracks? I call BS. And try not to let him convince you that you need muffler bearings...

Yeah, cause everyone knows that muffler bearings only need replacing every 80k miles. When the time comes though, I've got an unused set I'll sell you for $129.95

*Sorry, I don't have an answer for your original question, but 43k miles does seem WAY too early for ball-joint issues. Before you do anything, a second opinion is in order. Have someone else look at it.

Oh, and welcome to the forum jteems!!! a little sarcasm is standard fare around here

Exactly. I meant to add that but was too flabergasted at the thought that you gave the go-ahead for unnecessary work.

He said your ***** have some play? I too call BS as those are long lasting parts designed to last the 100,000 mile warranty period. I say that guy feeding you that crap has been playing with his ***** too much

Try and see if those are still covered under warranty; those are not a normal wear item (like a clutch, brake pads, etc.).

Just trying to keep you out of debt, jteems, in our usual, sarcastic, demeaning, crude but friendly way.

i don't know about you all - but i had a 3yr/36000 mile warranty... so there is only fixing of the car at this point for me.

Yes what is this 100,000 mile warranty period someone was speaking of? I don't think even the new cars have that much coverage.

I know I've read of at least one other guy who had to replace these at 30K miles btw. And yes, he wasn't exactly impressed either.
