Gas fill-up question?
 

I pumped 16.344 gallons into my car on Sunday, has anyone ever pumped more than 16 gallons into a car that DIDN'T run out of gas? I thought our tanks are 16 gallons full. Although my tank was VERY empty when I made it to the station, I still had some in there. Also, I stopped at 16.344 not because I ran out of room*, but becuase that was an even $50.00. I may have been able to get 16.4 or 16.5, not sure.


*My car has the common fill-up issue where it's sometimes difficult to put gas in without the pump automatically kicking off. I have to pump it very slow and keep an eye on it or it will start pouring out the top. At 16.344 I could tell it was full becuase the sound changed, but could have put more I think.

When we had the '07 GT Vert, I put in 16.2 into a 16.1 gal tank. I figure the filler tube has to hold some to. A couple of tenths of a gal is not much volume really.

Yeah, I suspect the piping to the tank would hold an extra 1/2 gallon or so.

In addition to the above, I think the rated capacity allows for expansion. If you fill the tank when the weather is very cold, drive the car a block and park it, you don't want gas spilling out because the temperature got very hot.

Or maybe the pump was rigged to show more pumped than actually (to line the pockets of the pump owner)... Highly unlikely, but I suppose it could happen... but if this did happen it would be due to a malfunction before being done on purpose...

That could very well be the case. It is not uncommon for such things to happen in Texas. Just this past November, the Tx Dept of Ag charged a gas station chain $30 mil in fines for gas pump fraud:

OP, knowing that your tank capacity is 16gal, i you go over 16.1 or 16.2 gal, you should be overflowing. Anything more than that and you are not overflowing, you are probably a victim of gas pump fraud. You should report that to your state's appropriate agency.

I had a different issue on gas fill up ...NO CAP ??

SO I call the dealer like a dummy , and complain theres a piece of green duct tape over the filler.. He said remove the tape and read " No cap system"

SO if no cap needed why the duc tape over the filler ? Said in case rain gets in....

But I was assured no rain would get in , or water from a car wash.

Also the manual talks about this special anti tamper gas neck ...Also mentions a special filler funnel specifically for the car and its not in the car , dealer never heard or seen one in an 11 Stang?

Also another surprise was NO JACK .. They said "use your roadside assistance" hmmm


Road help is great when you have time to kill , but what ever happened to get out change the tire .

Also dealer said there is no room in the trunk for either a spare or a jack .

Go figure . I see a trunk big enough for my amp guitars , duffels , tools bag , bottle jack ,ect ect

These necessary items that are missing should be standard. A doughnut spare OK ...

But a pump and bottle of goo - to get you thru your trip at 400AM in no mans land ?

Myself am going to carry a full size spare and tire , change it when the time comes and then drive like my spare is a "pump w/h bottle of goo"

You really don't want to be driving around with an empty gas tank. When you do, your tank builds up condensation, which is water droplets. I very rarely let my tank drop to less then half a tank.

Also driving around that low can cause your fuel pump to burnout since it uses that 2 gallons of spare gas to keep it cool. E to F is 14 gallons, on my car atleast.
