Default 3.73 gears - cost & opinion

I bought my '11 GT used, the dealer was 'pretty sure' it had 3.73 gears, well.. he was wrong, it has 3.31's I did some shopping and found the price of 3.73's to be alot higher than I expected. I also wonder if it's really 'worth it'. I have no intentions of ever 'drag racing' etc. (just the occasional romp down a country road).. I drove a pickup for over 15 years, so the GT's power is PLENTY for me..

What'd you guys pay for gears (installed), given what I've said about my driving habits, do you think it's worth it??

TIA

Usual price is around 500-550 installed.

Yes.... it is worth it.
Make sure you do with with the Ford Racing Gears and not the Motive gears
Ford Racing ones end with an A at their number. Motives with an M.

Also... I dont care WHO tells you that you don't need a full install kit that includes new bearings.... GET ONE. It will save you problems down the road and possibly from the start.

550 IS WITH the full install kit.

I have owned 2 GT's. A 2009 5/M w/3.31's and my current one, a 2010 5/M w/3.73's. The 3.73's are perfect in my opinion. I am in the same exact boat you are. I drove trucks for years ( I still own one ). I have mine SCT BAMA tuned and with the 3.73's. These cars where made for that gear ratio. When yo step on it, it goes! After all isn't that why you bought a GT to start with?

yes they are worth it. pricing will vary from shop to shop. I paid $150 for the gears, three bottles of RP 75-140 @ $19 each and $300 for labor to install. Ask your shop which kit you need and depending on the mileage you may not need a full kit. I had 3K mile on mine and bought the small install kit and no issues. Whipple here and hammer the **** out of the car with NO issues. No damage removing the pinion bearing it that usually gets beat up. So it all goes back to the installer!

My advice is still to buy the full install kit.
Not much more money at ALL and it's better than having to go back in if
troubles arise.... which they often can without a full install kit.

I totally agree with Blacksmoke on all points. Mine came stock 3:55's. I changed to 3:73's the first year and actually went to 4:10's last year with no regrets...and for sure full install kit with new bearings.

I have 3.73s and love them. That being said, I wouldn't go out and install new gears on a pretty much brand new car. Why not wait awhile and see if you REALLY need 3.73s? From a resale standpoint, I would NEVER buy a car that had had a gear swap. Not sure if this is something you care about at all but just something to keep in mind.

Dunno why you would never buy a car with a gear swap.
It's as common as a diaper swap on a baby with these cars.

I like the idea, it's just a little more $$ than I expected. I got a quote that included Ford gears, pinion bearing, crush sleeve, shop supplies, fluid etc.. it was $606 total.. I think i'm going to to a tuner and CAI first and maybe gears later this year. Thanks for the input guys.
