I was wondering how many 2010+ owners have spent time searching all around their gas stations looking for their gas caps!
The new capless system has won awards but there is a learning curve to a new system |

No problem with somebody putting things into, or siphoning gas. Even though the door is easy to open, there is a locking mechanism in the filler tube and you cannot put anything in it except the gas filler spout. I didn't believe it at first, and tried to put my finger in the opening and sure enough the filler tube was sealed by a swivel plate. In case you haven't found it, there is a special plastic spout under the trunk mat with the spare. If you ever have to add gas from a can you need that plastic spout to open the filler tube.
I guess I had a good salesman as he went over all of this in the sales pitch, including how to open the door, and then he spent a good hour showing me how everything worked after I bought the car. |
Just to update -
Ford does have what they call a locking fuel plug: "Deter tampering and enhance your peace of mind with the available precision-fit Locking Fuel Plug. Easy on and off at the twist of a key. For use with the Easy Fuel™ Capless Fuel Filler System." |
I will have to order on of those. I just hope someone else other than the dealership carries those. The dealerships tend to charge too much.

Brains enough to earn enough $$ to purchase a new 5.0 but not enough to allow him to figure out how to operate it. I took the $5 and opened his glovebox, took out his owners manual and handed it to him. I then smiled and drove off hurriedly. :) |

Putting a cap on a capless system?? Seems redundant to me.

First, there is no reference in the owners manual to opening the door that I can find. Soooo...you just took his money. Or maybe you had no idea how to open the new ones. Money to buy a car has nothing to do with intelligence...... |

on his brand new 5.0 at the gas station...I took the $5 and opened his glovebox, took out his owners manual and handed it to him. I then smiled and drove off hurriedly. :) Yep, there is a flaw with the manual. It does not anywhere describe that the gas door is opened by gently pushing in on it. I know this from first hand experience because I wasted 15min reading the useless manual at a gas station for my very first gas fill-up. If Ford in their infinite wisdom would have put in that simple instruction, that would not even take more than a quarter of a page to explain an draw a simple graphic, this entire thread would not even exist. |
The other thing, the sales staff should be pointing out the features of the car. I told mine that there was really no need to as I have had a few.....and he proceeded to show me the new features which also included many of the older style items....followed by a statement....you know about that don't you. And yes, Ford should simply mod the manual with a stick on page. I think my '07 had a page with a change like that. The salesman stuck it in place once the car was sold.

^ what a GREAT idea.
At the front of each year's manual should be a page showing the changes on that Mustang over the previous versions. Could be useful for the numerous repeat buyers of the Mustang. |
